This paper discusses the tensions and contradictions that exist in the everyday experience of people living in a capitalist society. As a starting point of the analysis, the story of life of a working-class woman was discussed. This story was researched through the “life story method” and the elaborated discussions relayed on thesis developed inside Marxism and critical social psychology. Two specific manifestations of alienation were highlighted: (1) the reduction of human life to the struggle for survival, in other words, under hard conditions life projects are reduced to the immediate level of everyday life; (2) the experience that the individual subject is responsible for problems and contradictions that, in fact, are social. The final remarks draw the idea how these social processes can be discussed in order to contribute for the elaboration of liberatory projects within psychology.
