Resumo
This article presents the relationship between daimonism and Franco-Bra zilian spiritism present in the narrative discourse of the novel Grande sertão: veredas, by João Guimarães Rosa, discussing specific aspects of the definition offered by anthropologist Clifford Geertz for what is religion and how his assertions are projected in the pathos of the character Riobaldo. From the cultural data that link the spiritist doctrine and the concept around the Greek daimon, the research exposes an exegesis to a central point of the Rosian narrative, the pact of Riobaldo with the devil, based on a section of the Geertzian definition of religion.
