Resumo
This study analyzes passages of
the documentation of the trial of Walter
Brut indicted for heresy discussed and
interpreted in the light of the normative
theological doctrine of the time. This
concept of legal regulation corresponds to
the existence of multi-formative practices,
especially in societies of complex and
dynamic power struggle such as the
medieval. However, when it comes to
gender relations, the pursuit of the
orthodox radicalism seems to be the path
taken by the mentality of the Middle Ages.
Based on these assumptions, the study
examines, as a cornerstone of this cultural
situation regarding gender in the late
Middle Ages, the relationship between
heresy, women’s apology, and misogyny
exemplified in the controversial Treatise
(1391) on the trial of Brut who was
considered heretical for using the female
competence and the defense of its public
and religious rights as a practice that
violates the misogynist religious canon
prescribed for the control and domination
of the women.
