Resumo
This paper proposes to analyze the representation of women in the novels
Os pecados da tribo (2005) and Aquele mundo de Vasabarros (1985) by José J. Veiga.
We seek to unveil the condition of female characters in both narratives. In this way, the
analysis starts from the idea that, despite the accentuation of patriarchal ideology, the
women of Os pecados da tribo and Aquele mundo de Vasabarros subvert not only male
power but, above all, political power, source of violence and oppression. Thus, due to
the insertion of new values regarding the figure of woman as gender in society, arising
from the struggles of feminist movements in Brazil, Veiga accompanies and represents
the displacement of women from private to the public spaces in narratives, which show
manifestations of resistance practiced by female characters, markedly situated in
surveillance and censorship contexts of totalitarian governments. Critical perspectives
by Hutcheon (1991), Souza (1990), Miyazaki (1988), Duarte (2003), Sarti (2001), and
others, will be used to identify the representation of the female character in modernity:
women who fight against the bonds of patriarchy, subvert social and political
oppression, and then awaken in themselves and others the power of hope for freedom.
