Resumo

INTRODUCTION: The work of teachers in public basic schools has been characterized by high demands and low pay and working conditions, which may influence the physical and mental health and therefore the quality of life of these professionals. OBJECTIVES: To assess the quality of life of elementary school teachers in Goiânia, Goiás and socio-demographic factors correlate with the domains of quality of life questionnaire Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). METHODS: A cross sectional, which evaluated 190 elementary school teachers from 15 public schools in Goiania, in the period april to july 2010. The instruments used were a socio-demographic questionnaire and the instrument for assessing quality of life SF-36. RESULTS: Most were female (88.40%), the mean age of 38.7 ± 9.2 years and the average length of service was 12.7 ± 8.3 years. The workload of teachers was 50.50% exceeding 40 hours. In the general quality of life, pain and vitality domains showed the lowest scores (64.03 and 62.02) respectively. The older teachers with more than 22 years of service in the area had the worst score Functional Capacity and teachers with 11 to 21 years of service had worse pain score in the field. Those with more hours had a worse score in the field Vitality, Social Functioning, Limitations on the Emotional Aspects and Mental Health. The female teachers had the worst scores in the Functional Capacity, General Health and Mental Health. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that pain and vitality were the most affected areas and the age, length of service, workload, and gender contributed to the worsening of the Functional Capacity, Pain, General Health, Vitality, Social Functioning, Limitations on Emotional and Mental Health Aspects of quality of life is considered necessary for public policies that act as both a preventive and curative education. The integration of occupational health with women's health should be thought of as the majority of elementary school teachers are female and the female gender proved to be an important factor for the decrease in some areas the quality of life.
