Resumo

The experiment was conducted in a barn with 21,000 Cobb male broilers, in order to characterize the variability of the thermal environment in a broiler barn and verify if the physiological responses and behavior are influenced by it. The treatments consisted of five 25 m-long sections (S1, S2, S3, S4 and S5) along the hall, set in ascending order from the air intake. Six points of weather data collection were placed in each section, to record temperature and relative humidity during the period from 21 to 45 days of life of the birds. To evaluate the physiological data, surface temperature, respiratory rate and body weight were collected from the animals at 23, 27, 32, 36 and 41 days of age. Mortality was recorded daily from 22 to 42 days of age. The behavior of the birds was to identified and recorded regarding the responses of broilers to the thermal environment. The experimental design was completely randomized, with five treatments (sections along the barn) six replications for the thermal environment variables, five replications for the physiological variables collected at 23, 27 and 32 days of age and three replications for the physiological variables collected at 36 and 41 days of age. The thermal environment, varied all over the barn every day in at least one of the periods studied. Respiratory rate varied significantly at the age of 23 and 27 days treatments S4 and S5 showed the highest values. There was significant difference in the surface temperature of birds, varying according to age and body surface area analyzed, and the highest values were measured on the animals paws. Birds body weight was influenced at the age of 41 days, and it decreased along the sections of the barn. We concluded that as the air travels through the barn, the environmental conditions become unfavorable and affect physiological responses, behavior and productive performance.
