Background: Water balance in the body, especially during physical exercise, becomes crucial for the good performance of athletes, in view of this investigators the effects of aerobic exercise on the behavior of water and sodium intake induced by intracellular and extracellular dehydration protocols in rats submitted to treadmill sessions. Methods: Rats (250-350g) of the Wistar lineage were used, the animals were distributed into 2 groups: Sedentary (S) and Trained (T). The animals were kept in individual boxes with 1 animal, with access to water, hypertonic solution of NaCl 0.3 M and feed. All animals underwent a period of acclimatization and aerobic training on the treadmill for 8 weeks. After this training phase, the animals underwent 3 intracellular and extracellular dehydration protocols (sodium depletion, intragastric overload of hypertonic saline 2 M and 24h water deprivation). Results: The results obtained were that the trained animals had a lower intake of NaCl 0.3 M when compared with sedentary animals (Trained NaCl 0.3: 2.1 ± 0.8 vs. Sedentary NaCl 0.3: 6.1 ± 0.8 ml/90min, p<0.05), a lower urinary volume and a lower basal heart rate. Conclusion: Our results suggest that in animals submitted to aerobic training on the treadmill presented a lower appetite for sodium, possibly by lower central signaling caused by lower urinary excretion, being able to correct hypovolemia with this amount of sodium ingested.
