Resumo

Functional capacity (FC) is understood as the living conditions of a person who can independently carry out their activities. Objective: To describe the functional capacity of an adult population in Goiânia by means of functional capacity tests. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional observational study of a population in the municipality of Goiânia from January 2018 to February 2020. The study included men and women aged 35 to 64 years, selected by probabilistic sampling. To assess functional capacity, the handgrip strength tests (FPP), the timed up and go test (TUG), the lower limb flexibility test, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) were used. and physical exercises of the participants. In the descriptive analysis, mean and standard deviation of the mean were used. We applied the Shapiro Wilk test to verify the normality of the data, and the Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: There was no significant difference between BMI and physical exercise, physical exercise with tests of functional capacity in the 200 participants analyzed. About 65.3% were overweight. The WC values for was greatly increased in 53.6% of women and 38% of men; 96.9% of the participants were not at risk of falling, and 26.9% had very little lower limb flexibility. Conclusion: Low flexibility, overweight and obesity conditions, WC and increased waist-to-height ratio (RCE), can contribute to the decrease in functional capacity as aging occurs, causing a reduction in autonomy for performing the exercises.
