Resumo
This study measured the thickness of cementum/dentin in the danger zone of mandibular
molars after root canals preparation (RCP) using a novel cone-beam computed
tomography (CBCT) software. Material and methods: Eighty-four teeth were distributed
into four groups: G1. ProTaper Next; G2. BioRace; G3. Reciproc Blue; G4. WaveOne
Gold. CBCT images were acquired before and after RCP. The e-Vol DX® CBCT software
was used to measure initial and final remaining cementum-dentin thickness after RCP of
the mesial root of mandibular molars at 1 and 3 mm from the furcation. The Kolmogorov Smirnov test, analysis of variance and Student t test were used to statistical analysis. The
level of significance was set at 5%. Results: Differences between mean initial and final
thicknesses of the mesiobuccal (MB) and mesiolingual (ML) canals were not statistically
significant. Lower mean initial thickness at 3 mm (0.900mm ± 0.191) than at 1 mm
(1.035mm ± 0.184) indicates that this is the danger zone. Although cementum/dentin is
thinner at 3 mm from the furcation (0.715 ± 0.186) after RCP, the greatest amount of
dentin removal was found at 1 mm (0.734 ± 0.191). Conclusions: Remaining cementum dentin was thicker than 0.715 mm in root canals prepared using #35 (WaveOne Gold®)
and #40 (ProTaper Next®, BioRace® and Reciproc Blue®) instruments, which confirms the
safety of canal preparation in the danger zone.
