Resumo

This thesis has as main objective to understand what were the values established by the brazilian literary critic about the novel Perto do Coração Selvagem, by Clarice Lispector (1920-1977), which was published in December 1943, by the publishing company A Noite. We were mainly interested in the critical texts published around 1944, when the novel was received by literary critics in a relatively positive way. To analyze the critical texts, we consulted newspapers and magazines available in the main periodicals of the mid-twentieth century. For this, we used the platform of the Hemeroteca Digital of Fundação Biblioteca Nacional. In general, critics associated Clarice Lispector with the stream of consciousness, present until then only in foreign works. Understood by literary critics as an heir of James Joyce (1882-1941), the writer proved to be mature enough to deal with comparisons, and especially to refute them. However, there was no way to deny the association with the Irish writer, since the book received, through two colleagues of the writer, Lúcio Cardoso and Francisco de Assis Brasil, the title taken from an excerpt from the novel The portrait of the artist as a young man. Joyce's book had been published in 1914 in New York. Thus, during the reading of the reviews, it was undestood a recurrence of an association with the idea of innovation regarding Clarice Lispector's writing. Our conclusion was that, at least in part, the choice of title aroused comparisons from a part of literary critics. In general, critics understood that, although the book allowed associations with Joyce, because of the title and the stream-of-consciousness technique, Clarice Lispector had merits that would surpass the comparison. In addition, we demonstrate that the relationships established by a writer before the publication of a book imply, in a way, the criticism that it will receive. In our study, Clarice Lispector was seen as responsible for introducing an innovation in Brazilian literary production and, therefore, began to establish herself in this field. In this sense, it is possible to conclude that, based on the concept of Literary Field, among others, by Bourdieu (1996), Lispector's association with people already recognized in the Brazilian literary market contributed to her recognition. In addition, we observe that, in a way, during almost all of her literary career, she was received by critics as an innovative writer with significant literary ability.
