Resumo

To investigate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and associated pathophysiological aspects in adolescents of the municipal schools in Goiânia. Methodology: This study assessed the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in 200 adolescents, 114 females and 86 males, 10-16 years old, enrolled in the Municipal Education of Goiânia. Metabolic syndrome was identified according to the diagnostic criteria established by the NCEP - ATP III, adapted for children and adolescents. (2003). The variables evaluated were waist circumference, fasting glucose, the concentration of HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides and blood pressure. Results: We estimated a 12% prevalence of metabolic syndrome in adolescents of the Municipal School of Goiania, being higher among boys (15.1%) than in girls (9.6%) It was observed that 32% of adolescents had high abdominal fat, 27.5% hypertriglyceridemia, 2% hyperglycemia, 32% low levels of HDL-cholesterol and 18.5% elevated arterial blood pressure. Also identified was that the chances of developing metabolic syndrome was higher in adolescents with abdominal circumference (AC) high (OR = 35.09), followed by reduced HDL- cholesterol (OR = 21.65), high triglycerides (OR = 8.85) and blood glucose increased (OR = 2,50). Conclusions: We identified high rates of prevalence of metabolic syndrome and associated factors among adolescents from the Municipal Education of Goiânia in Goiania. These findings are relevant and indicate the need for effective public actions to treatment and prevention of metabolic syndrome.
