Resumo
Bean cultivation is significantly important for Brazilian family farming. This legume is one of the
main staple foods for various families in the country, especially low-income households, and it is
probably their main source of vegetable protein. In this context, this research aims at studying the
production chain of beans which are produced by family farming in Goiás, from the perspective of
competitiveness regarding the bean production and commercialization operated by this same
producer before the bean market. It is a basic hypothesis the fact that the competitiveness drivers
used by family farming are fragile. Nevertheless, those family farmers make use of divercificated
strategies in the bean production and commercialization which lead them to compete in the
market. This paper consists in an exploratory case study whose primary data collection was
conducted through elaboration and application of semi-structured interviews with closed
questions, aiming at collecting information from key agents from upstream to downstream. We
have interviewed two producers from Planalto Sectional and two from Vale do Paranã Sectional;
one technician from EMATER Vale Planalto and five from EMATER Vale do Paranã Sectional;
two private technicians from EMATER Planalto Sectional; one grain broker from Planalto
Sectional and three secretaries of municipal agriculture from Vale do Paranã Sectional; having a
total of sixteen interviews held in March and in June of 2015. The results suggest that the
considered hypothesis is true, once the drivers used by the farmers in question lead them to
competitive advantages in bean production and commercialization. However, according to Van
Duren et al. (1991) methodology, this competitiveness is considered very low, next to neutrality.
Therefore, it is important that those producers give special attention to such competitiveness.
