Resumo

The pilgrimage of Santa Lucia is a Catholic manifestation held in the city of Porangatu since 2002. The community of Santa Luzia, responsible for organizing the party in honor of its patron saint, is one of the rural communities belonging to religious territory of the local Catholic Church. This study aims to understand how the pilgrimage of Santa Luzia, in their rituals and symbolism, contribute with formation of a territorial identity in the community that materializes. Religious territories of the Catholic Church are territorial delineations in which the clergy manages the religious services of the Catholic faith and to promote a religious identity in that territory. In terms of methodological procedures initially was devoted to literature review, to be used for journal articles, beyond texts published in conference proceedings, books, and Graduation texts. The documentary research also showed the deep need in the logical ordering of elements and facts. The field work was carried out through an ethnogeography associated with participatory research, with semi-structured interviews and questionnaires, also relying on oral history. Even though, the pilgrimage of Santa Luzia it was designed by an outsider to the community, has always been held by farmers in the community. As an invented tradition, this festival is already considered a heritage of the local community, responsible for generating feelings of belonging both for the party, as the territory of the community, where celebrate the celebration. It was possible to apprehend that the symbolic disputes for festive territory of the pilgrimage, the community of Santa Luzia seeks to impose their sense of party, trying to protect it from unholy practices, such as dances and drunkenness. It also highlights the fact that territorial identities in the community, built on a symbolic territory that sums up the collective memory of the group, are in Catholic territories its conformation. It became clear that the devoted prayers to the saints of each community family are important forms of sociability in the community and contribute to the formation of territorial identity in the locality. The celebration of Santa Lucia is responsible for articulating a set of symbolic elements that participated in the community's social construction. To be held every year, the religious celebration revives the past of the community and connects it to the present, in addition to making the best known community. Thus, three elements have been identified to contribute significantly to territorial identity in the community of Santa Luzia: institutionalized Catholic territories, prayers and pilgrimage.
