Resumo
The present dissertation, affiliated to the humanistic tradition of geography, constitutes, in
dialogue with other sciences, a study of concepts which have not been profusely examined
yet. To begin with, it proposes a geographical analysis of memory. Afterwards, it promotes
some reflections about the elderhood with the aim of grasping it by means of the humanistic
prism, thus acknowledging the remembrance capacity of the subjects. The study sets as its
main objective the comprehension of memories as an element capable of revealing the
experience of locals with the place they live in on a daily basis, as well as identifying the
meaning of heritage within the space accounts of the elderly. The unfolding of this
preliminary idea constitutes the formulation of specific objectives, namely: understand the
relation established between the subjects of this research and the patrimonialization process
which has taken place since 2001, when UNESCO designed Cidade de Goiás as a World
Heritage Site; identify the strategies employed by locals in reinventing their daily life while
dealing with the heritage management; acknowledge the need of including, as elements of
appreciation of the heritage, the roles played the subjects’ experiences and their daily livings;
describe the most meaningful and recurrent places in the life histories of the elderly locals,
and identify the physical and functional changes that these places went through along the
passage of time. The methodological enterprise is undertaken in dialog with a couple of the
leading authors who have publish in some related areas: Ricoeur (2007) with his
phenomenology of memory and his conception of the third space, bound to the meaning of
inhabiting; and Certeau (2014) with his accounts of space which show the everyday
relationship kept between the individuals and their places. Out of these conceptions, we had
conversations with thirteen locals of Cidade de Goiás’ Historic Downtown, which, driven by a
few guiding questions, aimed to highlight their experiences with the places of the city
throughout different periods of their lives. Afterwards, we catalogued the main places and
described them with the aid of historical archive photographs as well as photographs taken by
the author herself, along with descriptions and accounts from the elderly inhabitants. The
bibliographic research together with the accounts’ experiences allowed the development of
reflections concerning the significance of the place for remembrance exercises, given that this
activity reveals the binding between life experiences and specific places, which evinces the
attachment and the sentimental relation connecting the people to the city. This relation is
capable of elucidating meanings other than those usually made public by Heritage officers;
other ones which are bound to each individual’s experiences. From this point of view, the
notion of Heritage can be understood as a concept with potential to transcend the need of
appreciation of material shapes, thus capable of including the multiple histories of those who
live (in) the place.
