Objective: To study the professional characteristics and perceptions of
speech therapists in a sample of professionals working in the North and
Midwest regions of Brazil. Material and Methods: The study has a crosssectional.
An online self-administered questionnaire was used for data
collection, containing closed questions presented in multiple choice and
ordinal scale (5-point likert scale). Questions included sociodemographic and
professional data, as well as questions regarding perceptions about
profession and professional activities. Data were collected between March
and May 2015 via Qualtrics online survey Platform. Statistical analysis was
performed using IBM-SPSS software, and included descriptive statistics,
scale reliability and cluster analysis, chi-square test, ANOVA and regression
analysis. Results: A total 179 speech therapists (29.25% response rate)
participated in this study, 97.8% female, mean age of 36 years (SD = 8.2).
Time since graduation ranged between 1.4 and 32 years (mean = 11.6; SD =
6.24). Respondents’ perception about the profession were used to segment
participants into three clusters, representing more positive, intermediary and
negative self-assessment of personal performance (Dimension 1) views
about the profession (Dimension 2). Cluster #2 included professionals with
longer graduation time and which are more involved with management
activities, education and training, most of them have higher income, working
hours above 40 hours a week, and greater job satisfaction. Cluster #3 was
characterized by young professionals, most with only graduation degree, with
work hours from 20 to 40 hours and low income, which seems to contribute
to a higher level of dissatisfaction with the profession. Cluster #1 showed
intermediary characteristics between clusters #2 and 3. Between-group
comparison showed significant differences among the three clusters for the
two dimensions evaluated (p < 0.001). Factors related to the profession
(independent variables) that most influence satisfaction of the speech
therapist were income, time since graduation and level of education (p
<0.001). Dimension 1 (self-assessment) was more positive than Dimension 2
(perception about the profession). Conclusions: It can be concluded that the
degree of satisfaction regarding the self-assessment and perception of the
profession shows more positive correlation for those with higher age, time
since graduation and income. Studies as the present one are needed for a
better understanding of the speech therapist profession as well as of the
professionals themselves.
