Resumo

Beyond a cloistered life in convents, Abbot Étienne Bonnot de Condillac (1715 - 1780) devoted himself to the world of science and philosophy. His vast intellectual production encompassed mainly issues concerning the theory of knowledge and philosophy of language. In light of theoretical and methodological principles stemming from the HistoriographyLinguistics, this thesis aims to develop an overview of the work of Condillac, especially with regard to the linguistic reflections that it encloses. In this sense, to explore some of the characteristics of the scientific and philosophical thought of agglutinated modernity in the eighteenth century, it is demonstrated that the Condillacian work provokes a rich dialogue with the philosophical tradition, especially with rationalism and empiricism, within a context dominated by the Enlightenment ideas of France before and after the bourgeois revolution of 1789, a period in which scientific knowledge, based mainly in the power of human rationality is placed, once again, as the objective to be pursued by all civilizations interested in developing themselves fully. In conclusion, it is confirmed that for the first time in the history of linguistic studies, the concept of language appears in Condillacian knowledge of theory as a result of theoretical elaborations too detached from metaphysical and speculative perspectives that were prevalent until then. Thus, the human verbal language appears in his work as the biophysical body responsible for feasibility, optimization, and especially the communication conditioning through the use of articulated and systematized linguistic signs in language. It has, in turn, become a real addiction to humans, because it is definitely seen as a protagonist both in the genesis and the development of knowledge.
