Resumo
The practice of physical activity has been strongly stimulated for a healthy lifestyle that must be
adopted since the childhood. There are many data showing the benefits of physical activity for
health. However, inadequate food habits associated to the technological improvements which has
impelled children to become less active have harmed those children health. From this perspective,
this study has aimed to evaluate the level of physical activity, quality of life and body image of
students classified by the body composition in a city from the Southwestern of Goiás. This
epidemiologic cross-sectional study was performed in 19 public schools from Jataí-GO, between
february and june of 2015. Participated 337 schoolars from third to fifth basic education grade,
between eight to ten years old. The instruments used to collect data were the calculation of the body
mass index, the international questionnaire of physical activity for children, the quality of life
related to paediatric health questionnaire and the children’s scale of body image. Trust level of 95%
and less than 0,05 statistical significance were used. From the 337 children studied, 11% were
underweight, 52% were eutrophic, 21% were overweight and 16% were obese. It is possible to
ascertain, based on the data obtained, that 48% of the children were rated in risk. In correlation test
it was verified that there was no correlation between the level of physical activity and quality of
life. It was observed that the overweighted children had equal or higher levels of physical activity
and quality of life than the eutrophic, been a differential from other studies. Both boys and girls
noticed their body image different from the real one. There were underestimations of the body in
88,7% of the children and dissatisfaction with their appearance in 77,4%, with 55,5% desiring to
be thinner and 22% desiring to be fatter. The body dissatisfaction analysed was high and the
children’s perception related to their body does not match reality. Those results show the need of
an educative action of multiprofessional teams to raise the awareness of childrenabout their level
of physical activity and the perception of their own body, in an attempt to raise the indexes of
quality of life which are currently median, being able to improve these indices.
