Resumo

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of biotin supplementation on dorsal hoof wall growth and wear, and on daily weight gain of crossbred heifers (Jersey x Holstein). In addition, the objective was to evaluate the effect of biotin supplementation on the lipidogram, serum fructosamine and plasma glucose and lactate concentration in these animals. Twelve crossbred heifers (Jersey x Holstein), six months old and weighted mean of 124.08 ± 16.57 were used. The heifers were divided into Control Group and Biotin Group, containing six animals in each group. Biotin group animals received a daily dose of 20 mg biotin for 120 days. Hoof and biochemical measurements were evaluated every 30 days. The total wear on the dorsal hoof wall in the thoracic limb of the Control Group was higher (p <0.05) than the observed in the Biotin Group during the 120 days of evaluation. The total net growth of the dorsal hoof wall in the thoracic limb was greater (p <0.05) in Biotin Group. In the pelvic limb, there were no statistical differences between the groups. In relation to biochemical parameters, it was observed that biotin supplementation did not cause statistical difference in any biochemical parameters evaluated. The daily supplementation with 20 mg of biotin for 120 days is capable of reducing the wear rate and, consequently, increasing the net growth of the dorsal hoof wall in crossbred heifers (Jersey x Holstein). However, it does not interfere with the blood glucose, fructosamine, lactate and lipids concentration on these animals.
