Resumo
The practice of tattooing has been studied by several areas of knowledge, including in the field of
human sciences. However, research aimed at understanding the one who tattooed is still scarce. The
first records on the occupation exercise indicate that, historically, this activity was associated with
socially marginalized people. However, in recent years, given the growing professionalization of the
occupation, we note that the meanings around the person who has been tattooed have been re-
signification, becoming a very attractive option for many men and women, originating from the popular
classes and who find in the practice of tattooing a way to ascend socially. In this sense, the objective of
this dissertation was to analyze the work of the tattoo artist, understanding how the tattoo professional
has been legitimized as an artist and, simultaneously, the tattoo as a means of artistic expression. We
observed that there are several strategies used by these professionals to be considered artists, among
them; creativity, skill, uniqueness, recognition and technique. Based on this observation, it was possible
to establish a typology of the tattooist career, since this occupational field has shown to be quite
heterogeneous.
