Resumo

This work contributes to the discussion about the importance of sports journalism in the debate about the participation of male homosexuals in Brazilian soccer and the homophobic practices of the journalists who make sports coverage in Goiânia, Goiás. The research proposes to analyze the position of journalists on the homosexuality in soccer to understand to what extent the performance of these professionals can contribute to the debate about the persecutions in the most disputed sport of Brazil. In order to achieve these goals, the theoretical part of this work is divided into three parts, the first of which is to define a socio-historical and cultural contextualization of the social position occupied by homosexuals in Brazil and Goiás, moving to the more specific field of the local football. In this sense, the aim is to understand the origins and context of the persecution of male homosexuality in football in an attempt to understand the reasons for a possible absence (or non-acceptance of the presence) of homosexuals in this sporting modality. In the second part, the main characteristics that make football a virile, aggressive and masculinized practice by some power groups of the stands are discussed. Besides physical violence, this work talks about symbolic violence that structures an imperceptible barrier to accessing homosexuals in football. This chapter also addresses the citizen status of this minority group in football and the conditions of access to the media as a practice of citizenship. Finally, the third part deals specifically with sports journalism, presenting the main characteristics, misconceptions, selection criteria and some indications for scheduling and silencing news in sports journalism. To achieve the aims, 18 interviews were conducted with journalists from the state's main vehicles (radio, television and newspaper) that open space for sports. This material was submitted to content analysis with the objective of categorizing the responses of the communication professionals and. The results pointed out that journalists do not consider the topic important for journalistic coverage because it is a matter that lacks characters (notoriety). In turn, the homophobic practices in the stands were classified by the interviewees as cultural manifestations of the bleachers and natural acts in the sports environment, which demonstrates a naturalization of prejudice.
