Resumo

Schizencephaly is an extremely rare congenital cerebral anomaly. Studies indicate that, cases of large unilateral cracks present moderate or severe psychomotor retardation, depending on the affected areas. Therefore, the objective of this study is to analyze the linguistic processing and performance of executive functions in an individual with schizencephaly, a congenital malformation in the left hemisphere of the brain, affecting the frontal and parietal lobes that exert extremely important functions for cognitive performance and linguistic. Data collection consists of: (i) interviews with family members, and with the participant himself; (ii) analysis of medical reports; (iii) analysis of tests related to executive functions, observing participant performance in working memory, inhibitory control and cognitive flexibility; (iv) analysis of language tests, verifying comprehension and written and oral production and lexical access of the participant; (v) observation of adolescent behavior in environments where it interacts socially. The results indicated that the most affected components were working memory (phonological loop) and cognitive flexibility, since it was verified that the participant besides not being able to retain more than 2 information in the working memory, also has difficulties in changing strategies to resolve conflicts. On the other hand, G18 presents an ease in performing tasks that involve stimuli in visuospatial working memory and in tasks of access to semantic memory. In the linguistic aspect, it was observed that G18 is able to produce language in a way that promotes meaning, using some specific elements and patterns to perform speech, reading, writing and comprehension, for example, has an expression based on concrete elements which are formulated from your perspective / personal experience, uses a continuous rhythm and no pauses; do not dwell on the details. In conclusion, G18 was considered to have major limitations in motor, cognitive and linguistic aspects. However, the results showed that due to the innumerable stimuli received, G18 was able to create ways to develop, minimizing impacts and the limitations caused by schizencephaly.
