Resumo

We investigated in this Thesis the supplicatio as an atoning practice, which highlighted the search for pax deorum. We will analyze, given the documentary and historical relevance, the 35 books of Livy (Ab Vrbe Condita Libri), from a thematic reading, which takes into account the construction of discussions that show the context of occurrence of the miracles and, on that basis, his observation, interpretation and atonement. In the same way, we understand the realization of the supplication in its various contexts and objectives, which are: propitiatory, gratulatory and expiatory. From this data, we went on to investigate more closely the supplication with the explicit objective of atonement the prodigies, to the extent that the information supplied by Livy allows us to. The atoning supplicatio, in this context, expressed the relationship between the community, through processions and prayers, and the space of the sacred, represented by temples, couches of the Gods and altars. Therefore, when referring to atoning ritual practice, especially the action of supplicationes, we consider that Livy emphasizes and evidences the search for pax deorum and the celebration of ritual practices as a means to promoting, evoking, and perpetuating divine blessings in the Roman Res Publica.
