Resumo
The inclusion of the deaf person in Information Systems is essential for the construction of a fair society.
Some papers present methodologies for the translation of contents into the Sign Language. However, they
use human interpreters in their methodologies for translating. This can lead to several costs. An alternative
to decrease the costs of using human interpreters is to use virtual avatars. The objective of this work is the
study, evaluation and application of the use of translation avatars from Portuguese to Libras in software
development. To reach the objective we evaluated tools of interpretation of Portuguese for Libras according
to cost and quality guidelines for software construction and linguistic quality criteria. The use of interpretive
avatars can have several benefits, however, we noticed that the translation tool Avatar 1 obtained
satisfactory results with the use of gloss. In contrast, the Avatar 2 tool presented lower results, its content
could not be understood in the evaluation process. In this way, the Avatar 1 tool demonstrates conditions to
be used in translation processes. However, we intend to investigate the acceptance of the use of this tool
from the evaluation of the same by deaf people.
