Resumo
Few studies have been conducted on the
morphologic structures of bovine hooves, comparing breeds
which are more susceptible to or less susceptible to hoof
illnesses. The objective of this study is to evaluate the
morphology of Gir and Holstein cattle, of different ages,
but under the same raising conditions. Eighteen pure-bred
male bovines, nine of which were Gir and the remaining
nine, Holstein, male were used in the study. The nine animals
of each breed were divided into three groups according to
three distinct age groupings – three months, one and half
year and three years of age. To collect the hoof material the
animals underwent tranquilization and anesthesia followed
by intentional death (sacrificie) employing using iodine the
medezonio, embutramide and tetraceaine. Two randomly
chosen hooves, one from a fore leg and one from a hind leg,
were dissected for anatomical study. Histological study was
performed on the other two hooves. The de-calcification
was completed using 7,5% nitric acid solution and 92,7 ml of
distilled water the histologic slides were prepared following
usual procedures. The histologic results such as nail height,
when linked to the histologic such as the diameter of the
horn tubules, the gaps between layers of the tubular cells
and the spacing between the horn tubules suggest
differences on the structure and quality of the hoof shells
between Gir Holstein breeds. No variations on ligaments,
tendons, vessels and nerves were detected.
