Isquemia cerebral em cães e gatos

Resumo

Cerebral ischemia, commonly called as ischemic stroke, promotes the death of neurons and glial cells, necrosis and apoptosis, in addition to brain inflammation and neurotoxicity due to the abrupt absence of blood flow to the brain or brain regions. It is a common condition in humans and begins to gain attention in the clinic of dogs and cats. Common frameworks for routine clinical care of pets as tumors, traumatic brain injury, severe hypotension, convulsions, thromboembolism, cardiovascular disease and shock, are predisposing to the onset of cerebral ischemia in these animals, which can result in irreversible neurological damage or even the death of the animal. The conduct of the veterinarian to identify cerebral ischemia is a determining factor for the prognosis of the disease, because the faster the treatment, the lower the degree of change and the greater the possibility of recovery of the patient. The knowledge of the veterinary practitioner on the pathophysiology of cerebral ischemia, mechanisms of action of neuroprotective agents, as well as indications for each type of ischemic, animal species to be used, and even the applicability of certain agents against the economic reality of the owner is indispensable for the successful treatment of the patient.
