Obesidade felina

Resumo

Obesity is characterized by excess of body fat that can negatively affect the health of the animal. This disease is considered an epidemic, is the biggest concern currently in cats clinical nutrition, and is associated with decreased life expectancy, orthopedic disorders and metabolic diseases such as diabetes mellitus. The prevalence is high and the owner's lack of knowledge about nutrition and body condition of the animal are determinant factors for the onset of disease. The prevention of feline obesity is little disclosed by veterinarians, despite the clinical diagnosis is simple, based on the observation of increased size and weight of the animal, the metabolic evaluation is crucial to understand the real state of health of the patient. Specific studies on feline obesity are scarce, and much of them is extrapolation from other species, but the cats have nutritional and physiological peculiarities which do not allow direct extrapolation, and thus little is known about the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in this disease, and specific research for the specie are needed. Treatment of obesity in cats is not simple, it involves a set of behavioral and physiological aspects of the species requiring specific knowledge and commitment of the veterinarian and the owner, for these reasons that it is difficult, long and has high dropout rates.
