O extrato da casca de barbatimão, Stryphnodendron adstringens (martius) coville, na cicatrização de feridas em animais

Resumo

The present study aimed to review the literature about the use of the bark extract of barbatimão, Stryphnodendron adstringens (Martius) Coville, on cutaneous wound healing in animals. Currently, companies and researchers from different kinds of studies, and the general population have shown a growing interest in the use of herbal medicine as an alternative for the treatment of various disorders. This occurs mainly because of the lower cost and the possibility of minor adverse effects of herbal medicines compared to allopathic medicine. A plant of great interest for Veterinary Medicine, because of their therapeutic properties, especially their potential in healing skin wounds, is barbatimão. The wound healing activity of this herbal medicine is given to high levels of tannins in the bark, the raw material used to produce the extract. Despite of the existence of several studies on the subject, many of them still are conducted with little scientific accuracy, especially because of the not adequately characterize the substance used. Therefore, it is recommended not only to characterize the constituents of the barbatimão extract, but conduct studies with more discerning and accuracy, to establish the real mechanisms to validate the therapeutic potential of this herbal in wound healing.
