Aspectos epidemiológicos da sinusite pós-descorna plástica ou mochação com ferro candente em bovinos

Resumo

Sinusitis is defined as paranasal sinuses inflammation which can be caused by viral, bacterial or fungal organisms. It also occurs following dehorning, trepanation or horn fractures, due to frontal sinus exposure. This study aimed to evaluate the main epidemiological aspects involved in the pathogenesis of sinusitis after plastic or burning iron dehorning in cattle from 31 farms from Goiás state, from the year 1998 to 2008. Information on epidemiological aspects of the disease were obtained during treatment of 68 patients with clinical signs, from a total of 2,492 dehorned animals from different breeds, sex, age and weight. Since sinusitis treatment in cattle is a laborious and time-consuming process and results are not always satisfactory, implementation of preventive measurements can significantly reduce economical losses. Few papers report pre, trans and post-operative complications of dehorning, including sinusitis, and the main risk factors involved in the process remain unclear. Our study concluded that improper conduct during pre, trans and post-operative period and surgical procedures performed by unprepared people are the main risk factors involved in sinusitis in bovine species.
