Causas de descarte de fêmeas bovinas leiteiras adultas

Resumo

Culling of dairy cows is a complex practice which depends on the production goals of the property. The aims of this study were to evaluate the main culling causes for adult dairy cows from herds with animals confined or raised on pasture. A total of 4710 adult female bovine from ten properties were evaluated from 2000 and 2003. Five farms raised Holstein animals in confinement. The rest raised Girolando cows on pasture. During a period of three years, whenever an animal was culled, the reason for its culling was reported on proper forms. The frequency of culling among herds of Holstein and Girolando was compared by the Chi-square test (χ2) at the significance level of 5%. A total of 926 animals were culled: 236 (25.48%) Holstein and 690 (74.52%) Girolando. Five hundred and fourteen (55.50%) culling occurred due to several reasons, 161 (17.36%) due to mammary gland alteration, 120 (12.95%) were from reproduction issues, 125 (13.50%) due to limbs affection and six (0.65%) due to digestive system alterations. It was concluded that the main identified reasons for culling were aging, selling for obtaining financial resources, low productivity, mammary gland alterations, reproduction problems, limb affections, and digestive system alterations.
