Manejo inadequado provoca mielite supurativa pós-caudectomia em ovino

Resumo

In 2008, the Federal Council of Veterinary Medicine prohibited the use of nonsurgical methods for caudectomy through Resolution No. 877. However, owners still use unacceptable techniques to promote caudectomy and no veterinarian’s orientations. This fact associated with the absence of sanitary measures is related to economic losses and sheep mortality. The aim of this study is to relate a picture of post caudectomy suppurative myelitis due to the use of inappropriate management techniques. A crossbred sheep, semi launched, female, three month’s old showed progressive paresis of the hinder members. An anatomopathological exam was conducted and it was possible to detect purulent exudation in the medullary canal from the lumbar to the sacral region and malacia of the sacral portion. The microscopy showed a pronounced neutrophil infiltration in the arachnoid space and medullar spinal cord. The anatomopathological data confirmed the post caudectomy suppurative myelitis by using rubber ring.
