he Purpose of this paper is to perform a quantitative and qualitative study where the
garbage problem is looked at within an environmental education framework. The
following two documentary films in the “Tela Verde” project from the Ministry of
Environment (MMA) were used: ”Geribabel” and “Caminho do Mundo”. Both films
were shown to first year secondary students at a public school in Goiânia –GO, being
followed by debates with a view to diagnosing the students’ level of understanding.
The students then answered a questionnaire which supplied the data for the study.
Results showed that 100% of the students knew that garbage is one of the main
causes of environmental problems, and 90.32% of the students stated that the films
had increased their awareness of the issue proving the validity of this methodology
for environmental education since it presents a welcome change to the classroom
routine, managing to attract and motivate students as well as contributing towards
learning by stimulating interaction between monitor and student.
