Resumo
We report the findings of Cryptococcus meningitis caused by Cryptococcus
neoformans var. neoformans and Cryptococcus neoformans var.gattii in
patients with AIDS. The Cryptococcus infection is one of the most important
complications in AIDS patients. C. neoformans var. neoformans is
predominant in this population, , with rare findings of C. neoformans
vai.gattii. Cerebrospinal fluid was obtained from AIDS patients and
submitted to direct examination with squid ink, and cultured in dextrose
Sabouraud and Guizotia abyssintica agar at 37" C and at room temperature. C.
neoformans was identified by its macroscopic and microscopic
characteristics. The different varieties were identified by means of the Lcanavanin-
glycin-bromothimol blue médium. We were able to identify 42
isolates as Cryptococcus neoformans var.neoformans and 3 isolates as
Cryptococcus neoformans var.gattii.
