Resumo
World population growth results in major impacts on the environment and water
consumption. The objective of this study was to verify the impact of the anthropogenic action
about the microbiological, cytotoxic and genotoxic quality of the Goiânia Botanical
Garden.Microbiological analysis using the Most Probable Number (MPN) method for total and
fecal coliforms, identification of the main contaminating strains through selective means,
differential and biochemical tests; investigation of cytotoxicity and water genotoxicity by the
Allium cepa test. The water samples collected in the Botanic Garden, presented contamination by
total coliforms between 1.3 x 103
to 7.4 x 106
and fecal coliforms between 1.6 x 102
and 3.2 x 104
.
Potentially pathogenic genera such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Salmonella spp. and
Pseudomonas spp., were identified. The water samples collected in two lakes presented significant
results for cytotoxicity and genotoxicity for the A. cepa system. All the samples evaluated from the
Botanic Garden water, presented low hygienic-sanitary quality, besides possible cytotoxic and
genotoxic action in two lakes. These results plus the presence of environmental degradation, debris
and litter at the site suggest a significant anthropogenic impact in this environment.
