Resumo
The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of specific IgM and IgG antibodies
against PB19 in women of childbearing age in the municipality of Goiania, Goias. 101
healthy women attending public health service were evaluated from 1998 to 1999. The ELISA
methodology was applied in order to measure IgG and IgM levels, In addition, the women
were evaluated regarding their age and economic, social, cultural and marital status. Statistical
analysis was performed using the chi-square test (X2), adapting p<0.05. The results showed
an underprivileged young population, presenting a low level of education but with regular
sanitation and regular prenatal care in spite of living in small over populated dwellings. An
overall prevalence of 34.6% of PB19 was noted (previous infection and acute infection).
Prevalence of 26.7% IgM was detected, of which 25.9% were pregnant, presenting a risk
factor for the vertical transmission of PB19. The findings showed that in Goiania 63.4% of the
female population of fertile age are vulnerable to infection by the PB19 virus. This percentage
indicates a considerable number of women susceptible to the virus with increased risk of
exposure of their fetuses to virus infection.
