Resumo
This study aimed to assess the prevalence of fungal infections in the routine of a midsized clinical laboratory, in Jataí,
southwest of Goias. 79,563 examinations were evaluated from July 01, 2010 to February 29, 2012. Among them, 191 were
mycological examinations, corresponding to 0.24% of the laboratory routine during the studied period. Among the 191
mycological tests performed, 88 showed positive diagnosis (46% of the sample). The anatomical sites used for diagnosis were:
armpit, face, groin, abdomen, arms, scalp, nails and small pustules on the back. Regarding gender, females were most
affected; corresponding to a total of 51 confirmed cases (58%), while males accounted 42%. Few data were obtained regarding
the classification of these species. Considering that fungal infections are not compulsory notification diseases and that there is
a significant information gap in the region, this study highlights the importance of analyzing the main mycoses identified in
laboratory routine.
