Objective: To carry out a comparative serological evaluation to the Phenolic Glycolipid
antigen-I (PGL-I), using the ML Flow test, among residents of an institution coordinated
by the movement for reintegration of people affected by leprosy to that found among
adjacent areas and geographically distant from the city of Anápolis, in the state of Goiás,
in order to collaborate in the seroepidemiological description of leprosy. Methods: This
was an exploratory, observational, cross-sectional, non-controlled, non-randomized
prevalence survey. It involved application of the ML Flow immunochromatographic test
for detection of anti-PGL-I antibodies, developed by the Institute of Tropical Pathology
and Public Health of the Federal University of Goiás, in addition to a semi-structured
questionnaire directed to the social determinants of the disease. Data were collected in
2018 by convenience sampling. Results: 79 people participated, being 19 inmates of the
institution (Group 1), 20 surrounding residents (Group 2) and 40 inhabitants of distant
areas of the city (Group 3), being detected IgM immunoglobulins directed to the antigen
in 10.5%, 10% and 2.5%, respectively. Higher seropositivity was observed in the
institution and nearby areas, in contrast to the distant regions of the city. However, the
data obtained suggest similar seroprevalence to endemic regions and is justified by the
historical configuration of the neighborhood. In addition, the current cases reported in the municipality are diffusely distributed throughout the city limits, without exceptional
geographical restriction. Conclusion: Serological clarification and information about the
pathology favor the elimination of marginalization and stigmas imposed on individuals
who once had the disease or who are under conditions of social vulnerability sheltered by
the institution.
