Resumo
Fecal samples of 313 stray dogs and of 45 dogs attcnded at vetcrinary
clinics from Belo Horizonte (MG) were examined by the Shcather's sugar flotatkm
technique for helminth eggs. Fifty nine samples were simultancously examined by
the sedimentation technique for comparison between methods. Twenty-two animais
were necropsied and the gastrointestinal conlents were collccted, fixed in 10%
formaldenyde solution for counting and identification of belminths. Hookworm eggs
were the most frequent in stray dogs (79.0%) and those of Triclntris vulpis in dogs
from clinics (33.3%). Association between helminth species was found in 47(15.0%)
and 3(6.7%) fecal samples, respectively, from stray and clinics dogs. Sugar flotation
was significantly (p<0.05) more efficient for diagnosis of gastrointestinal helminthiasis
than the sedimentation method. At necropsy, 90.9% of dogs were positive for Ancylosíoma spp, 86.4% for Dipylidium caninum, 59.0% for T. vulpis and 45.5% for
Toxocara canis.
