Resumo

Several studies report the correlation between the carious prevalence and the number of mutans streptococci (MS) and other microorganisms in the saliva. We investigated the distribution of MS and yeasts in the saliva of 93 members of six families with at least 3 generations. Whole non stimulated saliva was collected, diluted and dropped onto SB20 agar and CHROMagar Cândida for the isolation of MS and yeasts, respectively. After the incubation, the colonies presenting typical macroscopic characteristics were counted and picked up in specific media for biochemical typing. Mutans streptococci were isoláted from (86.0%) members and the counts ranged from 0.003x105'(log 2.477) to 1600.0xl05 (log 8.204) CFU/mL saliva. Ali 73 adults were colonized by MS, but these bactéria were detected in 7 (35,0%) of the 20 children. Streptococcus mutans occurred in 78 (97.5%) members, and 51 (63.7%) were monocolonized. Streptococcus sobrinus occurred in 29 (36.3%) and 2 (2.5%) were monocolonized. Twenty-seven (33.8%) persons were colonized with S. mutans and S. sobrinus, Moreover. 64 (68.6%) members were colonized with yeasts. The results showed a high prevalence (86.0%) of MS and yeasts (68.6%) in the saliva, suggesting the high risk of interfamilial transmission of these microorganisms.
