Resumo
Understanding the emergence of a new cultural history of the sea in the 1990s and the revision of the “terracentric” tropes that have always underscored philosophical and historiographic understandings of human societies, this research discusses the ocean as a “place” that gathers images, experiences and memories that necessarily open to a new constellation of thematic and aesthetic problems. Considering the pictorial and Anglo-American tradition of sea representation, and the dialogue between contemporary oceanic perspectives and and the fields of postcolonial literature, the philosophy of landscape, art history and visual culture, I investigate the works of Caspar David Friedrich, J. M. W. Turner, Drexciya, The Otolith Group and Ellen Gallagher. How such works can provide an alternative spatialization of our cultural imagination and contribute to the emergence of a new perspective on the relation between art, nature and identity is the main focus of this thesis.
