Resumo
The objective of this study was to evaluate four protocols in the treatment of surgical
wounds of cattle thugs prepared by modified technique of ventrolateral beflexion of
the preputial orifice. 60 non-castrated steers were used, crossbred (Bos taurus x Bos
indicus), clinically healthy, with an average age of 12 months. The animals were
divided into four groups (n = 15), according to the treatment used in the postoperative
period: Group I, commercial ointment 1; group II, commercial ointment 2; Group III
povidone-iodine solution 10%; group IV, glycolic extract of barbatimão bark
(Stryphnodendron adstringens) to 10%. It was evaluated macroscopically the number
of animals with complete healing, healing time and post-operative complications. The
histology evaluation of the skin for tissue reaction was held in the 15th and 21th
postoperative day. There was no difference between treatments in GIII and GIV, but
both had lower healing time (19.60 and 19.92 days respectively) greater number of
animals with complete healing and lower postoperative complication rates compared
to GI and GII (p <0.05). Histologically there was presence of mononuclear
inflammatory infiltrate in all animals, with lots of lymphocytes in GI. The GIV showed
greater amount of scar tissue on the 21st postoperative day. It follows that
polyvidone iodine and glycolic extract of barbatimão bark 10% optimized the healing
process and reduced the number of postoperative complications of surgical wounds
in animals in this study.
