The identity sketched by these authors refl ected their preoccupations and the respective historical periods in which the books were written. In the case of Euclidesda Cunha, by revealing the “sertão” (that is, the Brazilian hinterland) and the “sertanejo” culture to the dominant coastal civilization, he brought forward the question of national identity. Brazil, at the time, was leaving the Imperial regimen behind and was looking forward to the Republic as a possibility of transformation. The nation, however, was still not able to identify what exactly composed the “national soul”. Carvalho Ramos, on the other hand, tried to rescue elements of the cattle raising culture in the state of Goiás, located in the inland of Brazil. At that moment, presenting this particular culture was an attempt to include the state of Goiás in the national context. Finally, Guimarães Rosa, writing in mid-20 th century, when the developmental philosophy of President Juscelino Kubitschek’s term (known in Brazil as the “JK era”) was predominant, calls attention to the survival of the “sertanejo” culture, while at the same time indicating its degree of universalism.
