Resumo

The article analyzes the expansion of sugarcane industry in areas of Cerrado, predominantly in the state of Goias, which has been occur- ring because of governmental incentives for renewable energy pro- duction consolidating the Agro-Energy Plan (2006 to 2011), issued by the Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA). Besides the cultivation of sugarcane been an alternative source to fossil fuels, (a mean of harvesting renewable energy), this crop also empowers companies to ma- rket some products resulting from the production of alcohol and sugar, giving sustainable perspective to this business. This article aims at a critical expansion of sugarcane production on the Cerrado, especially in the consolidation and creation of new industrial units in the State of Goias. Such expansion brings new challenges, especially related to socio-environmental conflicts arising from the expansion process of monocultures and loss of biodiversity, maintenance and expansion of degrading forms of work in the sugarcane fields and pressure on the family farmers, who lose competitiveness and reduce the rate of food production.
