Despite the great progress of the officialmedicine, popularmedicine and alternative therapies
have obtained some credibility because, in many cases, they bring answers to population needs and
expectative. The purpose of this study was to analyze in what extent popular beliefs and alternative
resources utilization influence the solution of community health problems, as perceived by Family Health
Program (PSF) professionals, as well as to identify how those professionals act when they meet clients that
use such resources. This qualitative research has been accomplished at the Center for Integrated Health
Care of the city of Amendoeiras, in Goiânia – GO, during the year of 2002. The analysis revealed the
following categories: vantages and disadvantages; culture and tradition x habit changes; emphasis in the
“natural”. The professionals demonstrated respect, acceptance, disapproval and interest in the knowledge
about popular practices. Data suggest that the adoption of alternative therapies can favor the achievement
of best results in health care.
