Introduction: In patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) the deterioration of lung
function associated with the systemic effects of the disease leads to the development of exercise intolerance
which may limit the daily life activities, resulting in a negative impact on quality of life. The study of exercise
protocols for implementation in private clinics can be an interesting option to interrupt the vicious cycle of
inactivity. Objective: To evaluate the effects of a combined exercise protocol on functional capacity, daily life
activities and quality of life of patients with COPD in a private clinic. Methods: Case series of 17 patients
with moderate to severe COPD. The subjects were former smokers, clinically stable and were admitted to the
pulmonary rehabilitation center of a private clinic. We used the Six Minute Walking Test (6MWT) to assess
the functional capacity, the Medical Research Council (MRC) dyspnea scale, the London Chest Activity Daily
Living (LCADL) scale and the St. George’s Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ), before and after seven weeks of
physical training, which included, in each session, muscle stretching exercise, resistance and aerobic exercise.
Results: The comparison between pre and post intervention revealed a significant reduction in the scores of
MRC (1.96 ± 0.93 vs. 1.00 ± 0.7, p = 0.01), LCADL (36.00 ± 9.59 vs 27.92 ± 6.54, p = 0.001) and quality of life
(49.70 ± 12.32 vs. 38.15 ± 12.89, p = 0.001). Conclusion: The exercise protocol was proven to be effective in
reducing dyspnea, and improve patients’ daily life activities and quality of life.
