L?objectif de cet article est de clarifier et d?analyser certains aspects de la constitution des discours qui
imprègnent l?univers de la capoeira angola : d?un côté, on trouve un discours populaire, en général porté
par les capoeiristes, qui affirme, parfois sous l?influence des intellectuels professionnels, que la pratique
exprime une ancestralité africaine ; de l?autre un discours plus académique, qui souligne qu?elle est une
manifestation urbaine et moderne, codifiée seulement au XXe
siècle. L?analyse de ces discours permet de
déduire que le processus de construction et de transformation de la capoeira a été, hier comme
aujourd?hui, une combinaison de croyances, de mythes et de discours d?origines diverses, populaires et
académiques en même temps. Par conséquent, plutôt que de juger la véracité des discours sur la capoeira,
nous voulons comprendre les conditions objectives qui les rendent possibles. Ainsi, la ritualisation qui
symbolise l?héritage de Mestre Pastinha, le lien entre capoeira angola et pratiques afro-brésiliennes, ainsi
que la gestualité même des capoeiristes, sont ici considérés comme quelques-uns des éléments qui
concoururent à pérenniser les discours traditionalistes sur cette pratique.
The objective of this paper is to clarify and analyse some aspects of the constitution of the narratives that permeate the universe of Capoeira Angola: on the one hand, a popular version gathered the capoeiristas themselves, where Capoeira Angola is conceived as a contemporary expression of traditional African practices; on the other hand, a scholar version where Capoeira Angola is displayed as a modern and urban practice, yet only shaped in the XXth century. Our argument is that this dichotomy is a false question. The process of constitution and change in Capoeira happened, formerly and nowadays, through beliefs, myths and narratives from different origins, at the same time popular and scholar So rather than judging the truth of these or any other historical version about Capoeira, our objective, more specifically, is to reflect about the conditions that made possible those narratives. Thus, the ritualization that symbolized the transmission of a collective heritage for Mestre Pastinha, the connections between Capoeira Angola and others Afro-Brazilian practices, and finally the gesture of the capoeiristas, are pointed as some aspects that enabled to perpetuate those narratives of traditionality in this practice.
