Resumo
In the present research, the cultural meanings of the television program Cidade Alerta,
shown by Rede Record and linked to the genre of police journalism, are discussed. The
objective was to understand how sensationalism occurred, mainly through the use of
clichés, adjectives, dramatizations and self-re-beliefs, after all, given the fundamentals
of journalism and journalism itself, could Cidade Alerta be considered a television
news? The theoretical reference dialogues with researchers who investigate journalism, television language and police journalism. From a qualitative approach, the study used
Content Analysis as a method and the Bibliographic Survey and the Documentary
Research as instruments of data collection and treatment. The considerations point to
the need for a public control of TV programming, especially in relation to the programs
that, travestidos of journalists, entertain more than they inform, besides inciting and
trivializing various violence.
