Resumo

In the present research, the cultural meanings of the television program Cidade Alerta, shown by Rede Record and linked to the genre of police journalism, are discussed. The objective was to understand how sensationalism occurred, mainly through the use of clichés, adjectives, dramatizations and self-re-beliefs, after all, given the fundamentals of journalism and journalism itself, could Cidade Alerta be considered a television news? The theoretical reference dialogues with researchers who investigate journalism, television language and police journalism. From a qualitative approach, the study used Content Analysis as a method and the Bibliographic Survey and the Documentary Research as instruments of data collection and treatment. The considerations point to the need for a public control of TV programming, especially in relation to the programs that, travestidos of journalists, entertain more than they inform, besides inciting and trivializing various violence.
