Resumo
This work deals, through the light of analytical psychology, with essential psychological events that affect the second half of life, namely: the midlife crisis, metanoia and individuation. Therefore, in its first part, it undertakes a brief visit to the fundamental postulates that mark this approach, such as: ego, persona, complexes, shadow, anima, animus, Self and the compensatory relationship between the conscious and the unconscious. It also presents a summary of the Jungian view about the structure and functioning of the human personality, embodied in the adoption, by the individual, of a typical psychological attitude – introverted or
extroverted – and in the hierarchical use of psychic functions, as resources for the process of
adaptation to life – feeling, thought, sensation and intuition. In its second part, it seeks to rescue from the specific literature, with its main focus on Jung and other contemporary authors, the interpretation of the psychological phenomena that are the objects of this study, based on the concepts presented. To the final considerations, the author exposes their conclusions, which can be summarized: the crisis of the second half of life understood as an “alert event” triggered by the unconscious in an attempt to balance the psychic energy, which appears as a symptom, either in the body or in the physical sphere psychic; metanoia understood as an idiosyncratic psychological reaction process – cognitive and emotional – to the symptomatic event, with the
exception that not all people will experience this process; and individuation interpreted as a progressive enlargement of consciousness. It is a horizon, a possibility and not an objective, especially in the therapeutic process, because as Jung says, it is “a more or less rare occurrence”. On the other hand, even if partially accomplished, individuation does not result in an individualistic posture, on the contrary, it will result in an understanding for the individual about the responsibility he have towards the collective.
