Eletromiografia aplicada às desordens temporomadibulares

Resumo

Aim: To review the concepts and use of electromyography, emphasizing its applicability in the study of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Material and methods: The literature review was based on research in the database PubMed and Scielo for the period 1949 to 2010 using the keywords “electromyography” and “electromyography and temporomandibular dysfunction” and “electromyography and temporomandibular disorders” and selecting among articles found, those that correlate the application of electromyography in dentistry, especially in temporomandibular disorders. Were also selected chapters of books containing basics concepts of electromyography, human physiology and temporomandibular disorders, and reports concerning the use of electromyography in different areas of health. Results: In view of the principles discussed in this article and after a review of important points related to the use of electromyography in the study of TMD, it can be concluded that electromyography, despite its severe limitations, have an important role in the development of research in the field of dentistry, especially in regard to TMD, it helps in the standardization necessary for the control of the studied conditions. In a clinical view, the EMG can be used as an auxiliary method for identification of muscle disorders, contributing to the indication and evaluation of therapies prescribed for TMD treatment.
