Resumo

Bishop Tascius Caecílius Ciprianus was absent twice from the territory of the city of Carthage, located in North Africa: during the persecution implemented by Emperor Decius (249-251) and during the persecution promoted by Emperor Valerianus (257-258). Only in this last period, which ended in martyrdom and death of the Bishop, did Ciprianus be officially exiled after Editus promulgated on August 30, 257. The previous absence was due to self-exile promoted by decision of the Bishop himself. His rise to the bishopric had been very controversial and his absence from headquarters also led to numerous criticisms and internal problems in his community. In these absences, Ciprianus drew up many of his treaties and several letters, seeking to guide his community of converts, even though he was at physical distance from them. In this article, we propose to analyze letters dedicated to deacons, elders and/or to the Carthaginian Christian community in general, prepared during their first absence from headquarters. Through them, we perceive the debates and the clashes, which marked the daily lives of these North African Christian communities, since the episcopal mobility ended up causing the emergence of several conflicts
