A biblioteca escolar e os documentos audiovisuais: investigação em escolas públicas e privadas de ensino fundamental em Goiânia

Research conducted in elementary schools in Goiania which identifies the existence of school libraries and their role within schools, the profile of the professionals that are responsible for this department and their relationship with the resources they manage, the vision of school administrators as to audiovisual documents as an educational tool and how they provide the documents and equipment required for their use. It notes teachers' interest in using these resources and the methodology they employ, how students receive such decisions of the administrative and pedagogic staff and what their anxieties about it are. The study was conducted through a literature review on definitions and functions, and visits to five per cent of schools, equally distributed among the network of state, municipal and private schools, guided by questionnaires for interviews. The analysis of information collected was quite flexible about the nomenclature used by the interviewees. Of the 23 schools visited, 21 claimed to have a library, but only 14 had people directly responsible for the space. Furthermore, the conditions of physical infrastructure, quality of collection and administration of the space called the library, are questionable. Some contradictions between the answers of those responsible for libraries and teachers show a deficient release of the collection and lack of partnership between the departments of the school. Despite the large number of teachers who said they had used or planned to use visual aids during the year, students were not satisfied. The latter expect more of the collection and space, even without showing a lot of knowledge about the potential of libraries.
